Brief
The client was asking for a black and white symbol of an amphibian or reptile. The design of the symbol should include elements of gestalt principles to create the form. The symbol should represent the whole body with no signs of its environment.
They also wanted three finished symbols in the end, each one had been assigned a different word that they had to portray through its point, line and plane elements. The words are: Graceful, Neutral and Volatile
Final Vectors
To portray graceful, I used thin curved lines, curved shapes, and circles. The positioning of the Fire Salamander is also curved which correlates with the design.
Utilizing the standing state, I designed the neutral symbol with the intention to balance the design out with using a mixture of curved and straight lines.
With the volatile symbol, I used harsh points, jagged lines and geometric shapes. The angle in which the salamander is being looked at creates a curved yet angular hook, which helped the overall design look more volatile.

Skateboard Designs
After finishing the designs, I applied them to the bottom of skateboards to create illustrations in a series. Utilizing the design of the symbol, I expanded on each word they were assigned to create illustrations. Choosing green for neutral which is reminiscent of good. Blue for graceful, to give a feeling of peace and elegance. Red for volatile, to enhance the ragged and sharp feeling of the word volatile.
